Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is the daring tale of a friend's rescue. Inge and Annemarie Johansen are a mother and daughter caught up in the Danish Resistance. Ellen Rosen is one of Annemarie's friends. She also happens to be Jewish. The story takes place in 1943 Denmark during the Nazi occupation. It is World War II. Anyone suspected of being a Jew is being captured and taken to a concentration camp. In order to save her friend's life, Annemarie must help sneak her across the border into Sweden. Inge and Annemarie are part of an organization dedicated to keeping as many Danish Jews away from the Nazis as possible.
